JC WITTBERGER

Here are two of her poems. The first one was written approximately a year or so before her death from heroin and speaks of drugs' grip.

Poem #1

"silent alarm"

motivation
far beyond my grasp
i lay here
motionless
i wait here
for the signal
some tiny alarm
screaming
"i'm alive"
why can't i hear it?
this lethargy
covers me
in heavy waves
my fantasies
drowning
among its sandbags
i cannot combat
its weight.

The Second poem was written for her father a month before Jenny passed away. The parenthesis in the last line was her indication of not quite knowing whether to end the piece this way.

i even brush my teeth like you.
when mum left me alone
big enough to decide my own style,
i chose yours.
i used to run upstairs
when the garage door
made its happy creaky sound
announcing-
"daddy's home!"
i used to sit in your lap
and roll your tie to your neck,
unrolling and counting the 'm and m's"
on its brown background,
supported by brown polyester trousers
and the man in them
that looked like mike brady
or the alpha-beta "tell a friend" guy
what happened to you?
where is my daddy?
all i see is (worn out) russ.
